DCSPC presents Jim Saah's In My Eyes and Matt Cabani's Anthem at Slash Run, 11.10.23

Join the DC Street Photography Collective and Chris Suspect in presenting the work of Jim Saah’s In My Eyes - Photographs 1982-1997 and Matt Cabani’s Anthem at Slash Run in Washington, DC, on Friday, November 10 at 9:00 p.m.

Jim Saah’s career in photography started when he documented the punk scene in Washington, DC in the early 1980’s. His photographs have been featured on many books and records, including Our Band Could Be Your Life and the cover of Fugazi’s Repeater album.

Jim will be presenting In My Eyes - Photographs 1982-1997, a massive hard cover art book of his early music photography featuring hundreds of never before seen photos of Fugazi, Minor Threat, Void, Black Flag, Circle Jerks, Dead Kennedys, Jawbox, Government Issue, The Faith, Iron Cross and more.  

Jim’s work has been featured in the Washington Post and Rolling Stone, and he has been the principle photographer for two feature films, Salad Days: A Decade of Punk In Washington, D.C. and CREEM: America’s Only Rock & Roll Magazine.

Jacopo Buranelli from King Koala Press in Milan, Italy, will be presenting Anthem by photographer Matt Cabani and published by King Koala Press. From Milan, Italy, Cabani is the founder of Hellfire Booking Agency. He has shot his way through every corner of the music world over the past three decades. His work can be spotted on album covers, international fanzines, books, music videos, and even hardcore fans’ bedroom walls.

Call for Entries

In celebration of Jim Saah and King Koala’s Anthem by Matt Cabani, we have a call for entries for your best music photography shots. We are looking for anything associated with music, whether it’s the ultimate stage dive image, a candid of audience members, a band setting their drums on fire, or a contemplative portrait of a band or artist. All music forms are welcome.

Please send no more than 5 photos 2000px on the long edge at 72dpi to gratuityincluded1@gmail.com by Midnight EST on November 3rd. Please label your files in this manner. First Name-Last Name_Band/Artist_Name-Date_Shot-Number.jpg.

About the Event

On Friday, November 10 selected photos will be shown live in front of an audience to a jury of artists and professional photographers. Jury members include Cynthia Connollly (curator, photographer, and one of the authors/publisher of Banned in DC), Lisa Walker (House photographer for Anthem, 9:30 Club and Merriweather Post Pavilion), Jim Saah, and Jacopo Buranelli from King Koala. Each judge will briefly comment on the image and give it a rating from 1-5. The winner, who must be present in person, will receive a copy of In My Eyes - Photographs 1982-1997. Second place will receive Anthem.

Following the photo slam, Jaco from King Koala will give a presentation on Matt Cabani’s Anthem and Jim Saah will discuss In My Eyes - Photographs 1982-1997.

Also, books will be available for purchase from Jim Saah, King Koala Press, Cynthia Connolly, and Chris Suspect.

DCSPC Presents King Koala at Slash Run, Thursday, May 18

Join the DC Street Photography Collective and Chris Suspect in presenting King Koala from Italy at Slash Run in Washington, DC, on May 18 at 7:30pm. King Koala is a DIY publisher of art books out of Milan, Italy, specializing in erotic, edgy, punk rock and forbidden photographs, stories, and art projects.

Call for Entries

In celebration of King Koala’s first American tour, we are announcing a call for entries, “Send us your n00ds!” We are looking for candid or posed, suggestive, erotic, and punk rock  photography that is sex positive, LGBTQ+ inclusive, with artistic sensibilities. Yes, that picture you took at Pride is fine, yes, that sexy drag performer photo is welcome here, yes, your kinky bedroom antics imagery will be accepted with open arms, that band you shot last weekend is cool too, and those secret polaroids in a shoebox under your bed, well, we want to see them!

Want to remain anonymous? Yes, you can! The only catch is that if you win the competition and you really want that camera we are giving away (see below), I ask that you discreetly let me know shortly after the photo slam section of our event.

About the Event

On May 18th selected photos will be shown to a jury of your peers in front of a live audience. Jury members include Jacopo Buranelli from King Koala, DC-based photographer Diriki Rice, Nymph the Enchantress, and one more TBD. Each judge will briefly comment on the image and give it a rating from 1-5. The Winner, who must be present in person, will receive a brand new Lomography Belair X 6-12 film camera.

Following the photo slam, Jaco from King Koala will give a presentation on what it’s like to be a publisher, the artists he works with, and what he is looking for in photography and art.

Then Nymph the Enchantress will grace us with a photo op not to be missed with a real live BDSM demonstration.

And, to top off the evening, Jaco, an established DJ in Milan will be gracing us with a set of down and dirty hip hop.

Tickets are $15. 18+ Arrive early as there is limited seating.

About King Koala and Jacopo Buranelli aka Rudeboy Jaco founder of King Koala 

Jaco is a publisher, DJ and social promoter. In 2020 he created King Koala Press to work with independent artists on editorial projects related to erotic, inclusive, uncensored and no-prejudice photography. Always in the underground world, he lived between Italy and Japan for almost 17 years until, together with Andrea Costarelli, he created the Lito studio for the promotion of art, the headquarters of every King Koala initiative.

King Koala is an independent collective focused on publications of underground culture with the aim of recovering the physical use of art. The book, the publication becomes a physical (not virtual) experience both in its print nature and in the photographic contents ranging from the fetish magazines Badseed Magazine and YSM up to projects related to graffiti (Greatest Hits, IMAGES YOU SHOULD NOT MASTURBATE TO) and to the musical galaxies (Anthem).

Sunday Feb 12 at 2 PM DCSPC Presents Two Street Photography Talks

DCSPC Members Chris Suspect and Mukul Ranjan will talk at the HIDING IN PLAIN SIGHT Exhibition at Project Create Art Center at 2208 Martin Luther King Jr. Ave., SE. Chris will present his work from Mexico and discuss how he navigates photography in different countries. Mukul will talk about how to approach people in street photography. If you haven’t seen the exhibit, its another opportunity to catch this first retrospective of the DC Street Photography Collective.

The show, “Hiding in Plain Sight,” is hosted by Project Create Art Center at 2208 Martin Luther King Jr. Ave., SE. For the talks the gallery will open at 2:00 PM on February 12, 2023. (Anacostia Metro and free parking at the event space)

HIDING IN PLAIN SIGHT: THE AUDACIOUS ART OF STREET PHOTOGRAPHY presents a retrospective of the DC Street Photography Collective’s (www.thedcspc.com) eight award-winning photographers, well known locally and internationally for their sharp-eyed documentation of the city and their community events. DCSPC's 2020 photo book, Bad Day, sold out in a week. 

The winter retrospective continues the tradition of community involvement with a schedule of critiques and talks by DCSPC members and area notables during the month-long exhibition. 

DCSPC also believes that art and parties belong together, so expect good tunes, drinks and snacks, and presentations by prominent photographers.

The show, “Hiding in Plain Sight,” is hosted by Project Create Art Center at 2208 Martin Luther King Jr. Ave., SE. The show will open at 6:00 PM on January 20, 2023 and runs to February 18 when there will be a closing event. (Anacostia Metro and free parking at the event space)

OPEN CALL: For photographers in the DC-MD-VA area. Submit up to 5 of your best street photos (can be taken anywhere at any time) on Instagram - tagged with #dc_spc_2023show - by midnight ET February 4, 2023. Best entries* will be exhibited at the show's closing event, Saturday, February 18, at 6 PM at Project Create in historic Anacostia.

*Submission is free, but selected photographers will be asked to pay the minimal cost of professional printing.

SPM Podcast - Chris Suspect Shoots the Insurrection

This past Friday DC Street Photography Collective member Chris Suspect was on the popular Street Photography Magazine podcast in which host Bob Patterson interviewed Chris about his experience photographing the Capitol Riot. In this conversation Chris discusses his experience, provides tips on shooting these kinds of tense situations, and whether or not photos from these events should be handed over to law enforcement.

They also talk about his upcoming show at DC's hottest new gallery called Bad Candy which will be up during the month of November into December. And, they went over the process for the making of Beyond the Frame, the short documentary about Chris and his photography by filmmaker Tim Huynh.

Finally they closed with some details about his upcoming workshop for Day of the Dead in Mexico and drop some hints about a new book for the end of 2021 from the DC Street Photography Collective.
