STREET PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP w/ Member Chris Suspect

DCSPC member, Chris Suspect, will be working with Glen Echo Photoworks this summer on an 8-week intensive street photography class that is designed to take your photography to the next level. I will review the basics of street photography, what street photography is and is not, and the history of street photography, including the work of the masters.

You will learn how one “reads” a street photography image and how to identify the elements of what makes a street photograph successful. I will discuss visual cues to keep in the back of your mind when shooting, from juxtapositions, tricks of perspective, multiple points of interest, capturing raw emotion, layering, obscuring elements, geometric principles, shadow play, and harnessing the subliminal power of semiotics.

After the first 2-3 weeks, the course will quickly move beyond the single image and will focus on developing a vision, building a cohesive portfolio, and setting the foundation for a larger body of work.

This workshop is for all levels but a basic understanding of how to operate your camera is expected.

Classes will be held weekly on Zoom starting Wednesday, June 2nd from 7 - 9 pm and will end on July 28th with a group slide show highlighting the students work.

Los Angeles Center of Photography - Street Week with DCSPC Member Ashley Tillery

DCSPC member Ashley Tillery is featured in this interview about her work with Julia Dean, executive director of the Los Angeles Center for Photography. This session was part of the 7th annual Street Week in LA Festival in which Ashley was a featured speaker.

DCSPC Member Chris Suspect Featured in Leica Camera Global Campaign

DCSPC member Chris Suspect has two images featured in Leica Camera’s first global advertising campaign in 10 years. The campaign features a video entitled "The World Deserves Witnesses" and is narrated by the one and only Joel Meyerowitz. One of Chris’ photos is from Trump's 2017 inauguration and the other photo in the video is from the Montgomery County Agricultural Fairgrounds, balloon parents. The DC Street Photography Collective, DCSPC, is proud to present a night of photography at Slash Run. This event will feature a presentation by Meryl Meisler, a NYC-based photographer who shot NYC and its environs in the 70's & 80s. She has published two acclaimed photobooks, Purgatory & Paradise: SASSY ‘70s Suburbia & The City and A Tale of Two Cities: Disco Era Bushwick. She will be focussing her talk on her queer photography from the female perspective by showing work from the heydays of disco some LGBTQ scenes today. In addition, there is an open call to DMV photographers to participate in a critique with Meisler and members of DCSPC.

About Meryl Meisler

Meryl Meisler was born 1951 in the South Bronx and raised in North Massapequa, Long Island, NY. Inspired by Diane Arbus, Jacques Henri Lartigue as well as her dad Jack and grandfather Murray Meisler, Meryl began photographing herself, family, and friends. In 1975, Meryl moved to New York City and studied with Lisette Model, continuing to photograph her hometown and the city around her. After working as a freelance illustrator by day, Meryl frequented and photographed the infamous New York Discos. As a 1978 CETA Artist grant recipient, Meryl created a portfolio of photographs which explored her Jewish Identity for the American Jewish Congress. After CETA, Meryl began a 3-decade career as a NYC Public School Art Teacher.

Upon retiring from the NYC public schools, Meisler began releasing large bodies of previously unseen work. Meryl’s first monograph A Tale of Two Cities: Disco Era Bushwick (Bizarre, 2014), received international acclaim. The book juxtaposes her zenith of disco photos with images of the burned out yet beautiful neighborhood of Bushwick, Brooklyn in the 1980s. Her second book, Purgatory & Paradise SASSY ‘70s Suburbia & The City (Bizarre, 2015), contrasts intimate images of home life on Long Island alongside NYC street and night life.

She is happily back working in the darkroom, making gelatin silver prints of contemporary images and never seen photos from her enormous archive. New York PARADISE LOST Bushwick Era Disco (Bizarre, Fall 2020) will be bigger, badder, bolder and make her first books seem like fairytales.

Meryl lives and works in New York City and Woodstock, NY, continuing the photographic memoir she began in 1973 – a uniquely American story, sweet and sassy with a pinch of mystery.

The DC Street Photography Collective, DCSPC, is proud to present a night of photography at Slash Run. This event will feature a presentation by Darrow Montgomery, a DC-based photographer who worked for the Washington City Paper for over 30 years visually narrating the stories of crime, politics, gentrification and DC residents. In addition, there is an open call to DMV photographers to participate in a critique with Montgomery and members of DCSPC.

About Darrow Montgomery

Darrow Montgomery began photographing for Washington City Paper in 1986 while still attending the Corcoran School of Art. He has worked for numerous publications as a freelancer covering such subjects as the rise, fall, and rise again of Marion Barry. The vast majority of his work has focused on the lives and people that call Washington, D.C. home.
